Plant Anatomy Laboratory

Head: Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez

Plant anatomy is a discipline that includes the comparative and developmental study of plant cells, tissues and organs. The analysis can be oriented towards vegetative organs such as leaves, stems, roots and their adaptations that allow asexual reproduction mechanisms (tubers, bulbs, etc.), as well as the study of reproductive organs. Knowing the structure of flowers, fruits and seeds and the sexual reproduction events that occur in them is part of embryogenesis. The results achieved in this branch of botany contribute to the knowledge of the species of native flora. They are elementary inputs in management and improvement plans for cultivated species or plants important for humans and livestock.

Current Lines of Research

They are oriented towards solving problems at two scales:

Basic studies aimed at solving aspects of systematics, phylogeny and evolution:

  • Anatomical studies as part of multidisciplinary groups with taxonomists from IBONE and other institutions in the country. Families: Anacardiaceae, Bignonaceae, Cactaceae, Fabaceae, Malvaceae, Nympheaceae, Passifloraceae, Rubiaceae and Sapindaceae.
  • Anatomy and embryology of parasitic plants, analysed as model plants.
  • Ecological anatomy of flora from different landscapes in the region (Chaco forest, Ibera, etc.).
  • Study of secretory structures, reproductive success and pollinator assemblage in selected families: Malpighiaceae, Leguminosae, Myrtaceae.
  • Ferns: Inferences of climate change on distribution in the NEA.
  • Study of floral and embryological characters in Malvaceae, evolutionary trends in the framework of a molecular phylogeny.

Contributions applied to the resolution of crop problems or species of interest:

  • Ontogenetic studies of cultivated plants in vitro: eucalyptus, cultivated peanut and wild Arachis, cassava, pine and yerba mate.
  • Pineapple: functional aspects in vegetative organs, ecophysiology, leaf anatomy in different growing conditions in the NEA.
  • Blueberry: evaluation of androgenesis in two varieties grown under different conditions in the Argentine Mesopotamian region, for breeding plans.
  • Strawberry: embryological analysis of facultative apomixis.
  • Native fruit trees, Aguaí (Chloroluma gonocarpa), Guaraniná (Sideroxylon obtusifolium,) and Aguaí-guazú (Pouteria gardneriana): characterization and reproductive anatomy.
  • Peanut: Identification of morpho-anatomical characters associated with charcoal resistance of peanut (Thecaphora frezii) and histopathological responses caused by the disease.
  • Cassava: Evaluation of leaf descriptors of germplasm grown in Northeastern Argentina.
  • Paspalum notatum; molecular studies on sexual embryogenesis, apomixis and in situ hybridization.
  • Quebracho: embryological studies aimed at elucidating low germination rate and the presence of vain fruits.
  • Soybean: floral abortion, pollen viability and pistil functionality, exposed to high temperatures and water deficit during flowering.
  • Tomato: morpho-anatomical and physiological responses to combined flooding and high-temperature stress.
  • Plants toxic to livestock: localisation of the toxin-producing fungal symbiont, Ipomea and Astragalus.
  • Plants with ornamental potential: floral and embryological studies on Crysolaena flexuosa (Asteraceae).

To carry out these tasks we have state-of-the-art microscopy equipment.
